The England left-back has failed to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford under Mourinho this season as he once again struggled to produce consistent displays for the Red Devils.

Shaw has only made a handful of appearances for Manchester United in the first team this season and has only started six Premier League games for the Red Devils so far.

Mourinho started Shaw in Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final win against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend but the Portuguese coach was clearly not happy with his performance as he substituted him at half-time.

And former Southampton star Dodd, who also served as a coach with the Saints, has lifted the lid on how to get the best out of Shaw.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Dodd said: “I was constantly on him . He likes it. He needs more of a cuddle, and then give him a little dig. That is how you get him going.

“He is a fantastic player, but if you have to question some of it – his drive, training everyday, and giving absolutely everything.

“You are at Manchester United. Mourinho expects you to put it in every session and that is an area where Luke will struggle.”

He continued: “He does make you pull your hair out at times. You have to try different things to get the best out of him.

“I think they have tried everything and they have not got through to him to get him out on the pitch and perform. Luke is one of those players where you have to keep on, you have to keep pushing him and he needs to be challenged.”

Manchester United are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they bid to finish as runners-up to Manchester City in the top flight this season.

They will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley next month as they look to win a trophy this term.
