Within seconds of Jose Mourinho being asked about his injury crisis in Lisbon, reporters nearly 1,600km away in the spacious Stamford Bridge press room were handed manna from heaven.
Mourinho had not directly called out Antonio Conte with his answer, when he claimed there were managers who 'cry, cry and cry' about injuries, but the inference had been made.
One of the mantras of Conte's summer, in various forms, was how he could not retain the Premier League title with 11 players.
As much as that was a message to Chelsea's board about new signings to boost his starting li

ne-up, it has evolved into something even greater following a spate of injuries.
The champions may have spent big - £182m on six first-team players no less - but when you factor in the personalities they have lost, you can see why the added pressure of Champions League football is proving a real challenge.
Not only have Chelsea voluntarily waved goodbye to Nemanja Matic, but also John Terry, Asmir Begovic and Diego Costa, who was a popular figure with his team-mates - if not his manager.

So was it any wonder that the usually amiable 48-year-old appeared a little shaken as the glare of the press room lights caught a gap in his scalp?
“A lot of time, also last season, I think he has to think about his team and stop, to look at himself, not the others,” Conte barked following Mourinho’s dig.
Conte, perhaps more than Pep Guardiola and even Jurgen Klopp, has quickly emerged as Mourinho's biggest managerial rival despite the pair having no previous.
Both managers suffered their most significant defeat to each other last season. Chelsea hammered United 4-0 in October - Mourinho's worst ever loss in English football - before United blew them away at Old Trafford six months later.
It may partly explain why Conte boldly turned to a three-man defence and has ripped up some of the foundations he has been left in a bid to avoid a ‘Mourinho season’ as he puts it in trying to retain the title.
Having rebuked him by whispering in his ear after he wildly celebrated following Chelsea’s trouncing a year ago, Mourinho has never forgotten that sobering return to Stamford Bridge, when United’s defence capitulated.

But this is the same Mourinho who announced himself to the world by deliriously darting across the Old Trafford touchline with Porto in 2004. So he fought fire with fire.
Whether it is thumping the strategically-placed crest on his club gillet, or unsubtly declaring that he would not lose any hair about Conte’s barbs, Mourinho has moved on from Chelsea.
It has escalated to such an extent that a section of the club’s fans chanted ‘Judas’ as he held up three fingers, signifying the three titles he won, during an ill-tempered FA Cup clash last season.
The Portuguese never needed to resort to such gestures when he returned to Stamford Bridge with Inter Milan for a huge Champions League clash in 2010.
But things have changed ahead of Mourinho's latest visit to SW6 on November 5 - which could yet prove the most tense.

Morata and Bakayoko could have easily ended up as United players
Much will be written about the various sub-plots - Romelu Lukaku/Alvaro Morata and Nemanja Matic/Tiemoue Bakayoko - but the clash on the touchline could prove the most telling as Mourinho looks to inflict a mortal blow.
Following a drab draw in his first big test of the season, away to Liverpool, it offers Mourinho the belated opportunity to send out a statement and taste the sweetest of victories.
One thing is for certain - there will be fireworks on Bonfire Night.

The big news in today’s gossip pages is that Mesut Ozil is planning to leave Arsenal for Manchester United either in January or when his contract expires at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror, the 29-year-old is so confident the deal will happen that he’s already told his Gunners teammates.

Ozil previously played under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid before joining Arsenal in 2013, and it’s believed the pair have remained on good terms.

Benfica goalkeeper sheds light on what Romelu Lukaku said to him at full time

Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar has revealed that Romelu Lukaku told him not to worry and continue working hard after his error gave Manchester United a 1-0 win in Lisbon on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old, who had made his Benfica debut just four days before, misjudged the flight of Marcus Rashford‘s in-swinging free-kick and carried the ball just over the line to give Man United the lead.

And he was decidedly inconsolable after the game, wearing a kind of blank expression and apologising to supporters before being comforted by Lukaku with a few wise words.

Speaking soon after the game, Svilar revealed that the Belgian told him to keep working in the right direction.

“Yeah, it was nice,” he said. “He just said that I don’t have to worry, continue to work and it will be okay.”

The Belgian wouldn’t have slept well last night. How many times did he play that free-kick over and over again in his mind, imagining what he could have done differently?

Lukaku’s words are worth listening to. He, after all, has experienced that gut-wrenching feeling of serving as the finishing touch to his side’s diminishment when he missed a decisive penalty against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup back in 2013.

But while Svilar heard the 24-year-old’s words, they wouldn’t have really gone in. The pain was still to raw for anything else to truly hit home.

In time, however, this experience will prove to be vital. Sometimes the best way to develop fast as a footballer is to learn the hard way, and one can only hope he pushes past what was a grim Champions League debut.

Man Utd made it three wins out of three in the Champions League fixture vs Benfica and here are the talking points from Lisbon.

Time to start Rashford AND Martial?

United supporters might have suspected Jose Mourinho told the players to shoot more at rookie goalkeeper Mile Svilar, judging by Marcus Rashford’s second-half enthusiasm. Rashford built up to his fortuitous winner with a few sighters as he stood out as one player who refused to accept just a point.

Rashford’s start was a given as the left wing pattern continued. Rashford and Martial have

started every other game since Swansea away in mid-August and that run could continue at Huddersfield after Rashford limped off in Lisbon.

Should Rashford regain fitness then the prospect of him and Martial behind Romelu Lukakuappeals. Neither have performed on the right flank and their positioning there tends to blunt United’s attack, but the pair are better players than last season and it might be worth trialling them in the same side soon to give United a new attacking option.

Mkhitaryan might need a breather

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has progressed so much under Jose Mourinho he is kept on the pitch when he is playing badly due to his knack for game-changing moments while under-performing. He was only brought off in stoppage-time at the Estadio da Luz.

Mkhitaryan had an afternoon to forget at Liverpool and, apart from a few early flashes early on, there was little improvement on Wednesday night. Mourinho is clearly reluctant to drop Mkhitaryan after his auspicious start to the season and it would be premature to explicitly demote him on the back of a couple of subdued performances.

The Armenia international might be needed at Huddersfield this weekend but Swansea next Tuesday is a chance to give him a breather in preparation for Tottenham.

Lindelof proves his point

The irony of Mourinho signing Victor Lindelof to ‘play in midfield’ from a back three is the Swede prefers playing in a four-man defence. That was apparent during his understated but confident display on his former patch, where he showed adventure with a piercing pass early on and seemed more settled alongside Chris Smalling than he was two months ago in the Super Cup.

Lindelof’s downside is his inclusion in Lisbon all but confirms he will not line-up in Yorkshire this weekend. Lindelof is playing one game per week, though, and that is increasing his confidence as he prepares to make the step up to a Premier League defender.

Does Herrera need deprogramming?

The expectation was Paul Pogba’s and Marouane Fellaini’s absences would enable Ander Herrera to step up and fill the attacking midfield void. Herrera enriched United’s midfield in his first season and was instrumental during the win at CSKA Moscow last month yet against more testing opponents he has recently floundered.

Herrera was nominated as a man of the match contender by United’s in-house pundits and the irony was the defensive-minded Nemanja Matic did more to stimulate an attack which sleep-walked through the first-half. Herrera was nearly as rattled as he was at Anfield on Saturday, where his irascible mood saw United relinquish any measure of control they had quickly.

He has played as a defensive midfielder for the majority of his playing time under Mourinho and currently seems bereft of the attacking instincts which made him such a prudent buy in 2014.

Mourinho’s stark statistic

The highlight of United’s evening was saved for the end of Mourinho’s press conference. “Twelve games, 10 wins, two draws, nine clean sheets,” Mourinho reminded the media. He conveniently omitted the Super Cup but that is a record Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte would trade for two months into the season.
